Première série de résultats sur la toxicité du pétrole brut de l'Amoco Cadiz ArchiMer
Le Roux, S.; Lucas, A..
The effects of crude oil from Amoco Cadiz upon gametes larvae and juveniles of mussels Mytilus edulis are studied. They are compared with effects of Koweït crude (standard of the FPI). Toxical effects upon fécondation rate and embryonnary development are observed. Oxygen consumption and grazing rate vary also when mussels are treated with water soluble fraction of crude oil.

Consommation d'oxygene de la crevette japonaise, Penaeus japonicus , en fonction de l'oxygenation du milieu: Effects de la temperature et de l'acclimatation a des conditions ambiantes hypoxiques ArchiMer
Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Incidence de la salinite sur les equilibres de distribution hydrique et ioniques et sur le metabolisme respiratoire dans le muscle blanc, le muscle rouge et la branchie chez le muge Chelon labrosus ArchiMer
Gallis, J; Piquemal, S; Lambert, J; Sergent, P; Rousseau, V.
Oxygen consumption, water, K super(+) and Na super(+) contents were measured in white muscle, red muscle and gill epithelium in the mullet Chelon labrosus) in relation with the duration of fresh water or sea water (1500mOsm) adaptation. The unit respiratory activities in gill and red muscle where respectively 5 and 3 timesmore elevated than in white muscle. The pericellular K super(+)/Na super(+) ratio of the 3 tissues decreased with the fresh water adaptation duration. In the gill, the intracellular K super(+)/Na super(+) ratio was stable while the parameter decreased strongly in the white muscle. The results are discussed in relation to energetic cost of homocellular regulation and homoepithelial regulation.

Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer
Pavlova, Z; Morozova, A; Gaudy, R; Shchepkin, V.
One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

Comparaison de la respiration chez Ruditapes decussatus (L.) et R. philippinarum (Adams & Reeve) en fonction de la température ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Riva, Alain; Maitre-allain, Thierry.
Measurements of oxygen consumption in the two species Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes phi/ippinarum were perfonned using hatchery-reared juveniles, grown under controlled conditions. The temperature range varied from 10 to 30°C. The linear relations between the logarithms of the dry weight and of the oxygen consumption were calculated for each species. Rates were compared in terms of standardized clam tissue weight calculated from the regression of respiration on tissue weight. Such a technique allows to make comparisons between the species by avoiding any interference from the variations in individual weight. Within this range of temperature, oxygen consumption of R. philippinarum and of R. decussatus exhibit the same variations, with a maximum at...

Etude experimentale preliminaire sur les echanges gazeux chez Pinna nobilis ArchiMer
Vicente, N; Riva, A; Butler, A.
Breathing exchanges of Pinna nobilis L. are studied in situ and in the laboratory with two methods. First method consist in introducing samples of Pinna under a 40l plexiglass bell equipped with haps. The bell is positionned by diving. The consumption of oxygen is observed with water samples and the oxygen concentration is measured with an electronic oxymeter. Experiments which are carried out during nycthemeral cycles are reproduced in the laboratory with the same type of bell. A second method carry into effect an apparatus more sophisticated, who put into circulation a current of water in an airtight thermostated cellule, where a specimen of young Pinna is introduced. This sample is gradually adaptated to the conditions of the medium. Breathing...

Differences between remaining ability and loss of capacity in maximum aerobic impairment BJMBR
Neder,J.A.; Nery,L.E.; Bagatin,E.; Lucas,S.R.; Anção,M.S.; Sue,D.Y..
In the evaluation of exercise intolerance of patients with respiratory diseases the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS) have proposed similar classifications for rating aerobic impairment using maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) normalized for total body weight (ml min-1 kg-1). However, subjects with the same VO2max weight-corrected values may have considerably different losses of aerobic performance (VO2max expressed as % predicted). We have proposed a new, specific method for rating loss of aerobic capacity (VO2max, % predicted) and we have compared the two classifications in a prospective study involving 75 silicotic claimants. Logistic regression analysis showed that the disagreement between rating systems (higher...

Effects of hypoxia on growth and metabolism of juvenile turbot ArchiMer
Pichavant, Karine; Person, Jeannine.
The effects of hypoxia on growth, feed efficiency, nitrogen excretion, oxygen consumption and metabolism of juvenile turbot (120 g) were studied in a 45-day experiment carried out in sea water at 17.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C and 34.5 ppt salinity. Fish were fed to satiation at O-2-concentrations of 3.5 +/- 0.3, 5.0 +/- 0.3 mg l(-1) (hypoxia) and 7.2 +/- 0.3 mg l(-1) (normoxia). Both feed intake (FI) and growth were significantly lower under hypoxia than under normoxia, with no significant differences being observed between 3.5 and 5.0 mg O-2 l(-1). During the first 2 weeks of the experiment, FI was halved under hypoxic conditions, and there were large differences among treatments in feed conversion ratio (FCR), i.e., it was 3.2, 1.5, and 0.9 in turbot exposed to...

Reduced oxygen diffusion across the shell of Gray gull (Larus modestus) eggs Biol. Res.
MONGE,C C; OSTOJIC,H; AGUILAR,R; CIFUENTES,V.
Gray gulls, Larus modestus, nest 1500 m above sea level in northern Chile's Atacama Desert, one of the driest in the world. Their eggshell gas permeability, one third of that found in other Larus species, is an adaptation that reduces water loss, but at the expense of oxygen diffusion into the air cell with resultant hypoxia and reduced metabolic rate. This contrasts with characteristics found in birds nesting at very high altitudes where oxygen diffusion across the egg shell is maximized at the expense of water conservation. The oxygen consumption (MO2) of Larus modestus is 66% that of Larus argentatus; the oxygen conductance (GO2) is equivalent to 48% of that obtained in 5 other bird species. The oxygen partial pressure (PAO2) in the air chamber of Larus...

Oxygen consumption of rats with broad intestinal resection BJMBR
Luz,J.; Griggio,M.A.; Fagundes,D.J.; Araújo,R.M.; Marcondes,W..
The study was performed to investigate possible alterations in oxygen consumption in an animal model with broad intestinal resection. Oxygen consumption and the thermal effect of a short meal were measured in rats subjected to short bowel syndrome. Four groups of rats were used. Group I was the control group, group II was sham operated, group III was submitted to 80% jejunum-ileum resection, and group IV was submitted to 80% jejunum-ileum resection with colon interposition. Ninety days after surgery, oxygen consumption was measured over a period of 6 h with the animals fasted overnight. The thermal effect of feeding was determined in another session of oxygen consumption measurement in animals fasted for 12 h. A 12-kcal meal was then introduced into the...

Comparative effects of long-term hypoxia on growth, feeding and oxygen consumption in juvenile turbot and European sea bass ArchiMer
Pichavant, Karine; Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Severe, Armelle; Le Roux, Annick; Boeuf, Gilles.
When juvenile turbot Scophthulmus maximus and sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were fed to satiation, growth and food intake were depressed under hypoxia (3.2 +/- 0.3 and 4.5 +/- 0.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). However, no significant difference in growth was observed between fishes maintained in hypoxia and fed to satiation and fishes reared in normoxia (7.4 +/- 0.3 mg O-2 l(-1)) and fed restricted rations (same food intake of fishes at 3.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). Routine oxygen consumption of fishes fed to satiation was higher in normoxia than in hypoxia due to the decrease in food intake in the latter. Of the physiological parameters measured, no significant changes were observed in the two species maintained in hypoxia. This study confirms the significant interaction between...

Evaluation of the defensive behavior of two honeybee ecotypes using a laboratory test Genet. Mol. Biol.
Andere,Cecilia; Palacio,M.A.; Rodriguez,E.M.; Figini,E.; Dominguez,M.T.; Bedascarrasbure,E..
Honeybee defensive behavior is a useful selection criterion, especially in areas with Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L). In all genetic improvement programs the selected characters must be measured with precision, and because of this we evaluated a metabolic method for testing honeybee defensive behavior in the laboratory for its usefulness in distinguishing between honeybee ecotypes and selecting honeybees based on their level of defensive responses. Ten honeybee colonies were used, five having been produced by feral queens from a subtropical region supposedly colonized by Africanized honeybees and five by queens from a temperate region apparently colonized by European honeybees. We evaluate honeybee defensive behavior using a metabolic test based...

Bioenergética del besugo Pagrus pagrus. OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
The utilization of the energy of food by red porgy (Pagrus pagrus Linnaeus, 1758) from the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) was studied. From the energetic point of view, it is proposed that the strategy of patitioning, utilization and storage of the energy of food, is an indicator of the organism response to the environmental conditions. The main objective was to know the proportion of the energy of food derived to the different components of the bioenergetics budget. In order to estimate the monthly energy investment in reproductive growth, chemical analysis of gonads from fishes caught by the fishery fleet and from laboratory studies were performed. Two indexes were used to calculate the energy investment in female ovaries: the proportion of net daily energy...

Effects of temperature on growth and metabolism in a Mediterranean population of European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Mahe, Kelig; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Delliou, Herve.
Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)...
